Emissions Testing of Composite Wood and Laminate Products

Health Canada and the National Research Council conducted emissions testing of composite wood products including trim made of MDF, laminated flooring, door, furniture (cabinet, countertop, bookshelf and table), OSB and I-Joist. Test specimens of trim, laminated flooring and furniture included domestic and imported products. An 8-day chamber test was conducted for a total of 100 composite wood products to determine the emission rates of 124 VOCs including formaldehyde. During the 8-day chamber tests, two passive flux samplers (PFS) were placed on top of a test specimen to determine the formaldehyde and acetaldehyde emission rates passively in comparison to those obtained from an active sampling of chamber air (chamber test).

This webinar will present test results of major VOCs from each group of products, as well as key sources of selected VOCs including formaldehyde. Comparisons of domestic and imported products will be presented, and emission factors with PFS will be compared with those from chamber tests.
